Ipswich aiming for great heights
![]() NO one could ever accuse Ipswich of setting its sights too low. The city yesterday unveiled its economic vision for the region for the next 22 years and the figures contained within it were mind-boggling. Mayor Paul Pisasale claims the city can create an extra 120,000 jobs in that time, including massive increases in the number of people employed in manufacturing and hospitality. At a time when most businesses in Australia are contemplating laying off staff, such targets seem extraordinary. But they are certainly not beyond the realms of possibility. Recent years have seen Ipswich's economic fortunes bounce back after the city spent too long in the doldrums. It's going too far to say the global financial crisis has not hit the city - but it has not had the impact here that has been felt elsewhere in Queensland. Employment in the city has actually increased over the last year and property prices have continued to gain ground too. Ipswich hasn't had it this good for decades and if the global economy rights itself as expected in the next 12 months, the city's growth forecasts could easily become a reality.
