Green light for a better future
Plan aims to create 120,000 extra jobs

A MASSIVE pharmaceutical distribution centre officially finished construction in Ipswich yesterday, with about 200 workers set to start work at the new warehouse next April.

The Australian Pharmaceutical Industries (API) warehouse at the Citiswich Business Park will service close to 900 Priceline pharmacies in Queensland and New South Wales. API's Supply Chain general manager Peter Hourihan said the distribution centre was built at a lightning pace and was arguably the best-positioned pharmaceutical warehouse in the country.

"For a company like ours, our warehouse locations and transport links are the lifeblood of the business," Mr Hourihan said.

"It's a great modern building, which being air-conditioned to 22c is great for warehouse staff, but being so close to the Warrego and Cunningham highways and Brisbane is a major plus.

"This means we have scope to grow our operations in the future, and we have the space here to accommodate growth."

The 19,000sqm warehouse is the first facility to be built by Walker Corporation at Citiswich since taking control of the project in 2007. Walker Corporation's National Industrial Manager Michael Sutherland said the rapid completion of the centre was a direct result of the good relationship formed between Walker, Ipswich City Council and API.

"Both API and Walker are making a long-term commitment to investment in this region because, quite simply, Ipswich is a great place to do business," Mr Sutherland said.

"Ipswich City Council is the most proactive council in Australia, delivering jobs and continued strong economic growth for the region, and making it attractive for businesses like API and Walker to commit to development here in this region."

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale welcomed API to Ipswich and said he knew their staff would enjoy being part of this growing community.

"The investment that companies like Walker and API make in our city are important to providing jobs, helping the greater Ipswich region grow in a sustainable way."

Walker is also completing a new 26,000sqm distribution centre for The Reject Shop at the new estate.
